Luxury Vacation & Golf Tours
Most American golfers focus on Melbourne’s legendary Sandbelt when they think of golf in Australia. Walking the fairways of those classic courses is certainly an incredible experience. However, over the past ten years, an entirely different and wilder side of Australian golf has emerged, one that most Americans have yet to discover.
If you want to escape the city limits and experience raw, dramatic, edge of the world golf, a new masterpiece is about to join the ranks. The Cliffs Kangaroo Island officially opens for public play in October 2026, and it is set to redefine coastal golf in the Southern Hemisphere.
Acclaimed architect Darius Oliver, the mastermind behind Cape Wickham, designed this project. Construction contractor Sam Atkins of Programmed Turnpoint first identified the site’s potential for golf more than a decade ago, and he later returned to build Oliver’s routing himself. Oliver’s design was approved in 2017, but bushfires on Kangaroo Island in 2019 and 2020, pandemic delays, and a wait for water infrastructure pushed the timeline back further. Ground finally broke in late 2022. What has emerged is nothing short of spectacular.
What Makes It Special
The Setting: The course sits atop towering 100 foot cliffs on the rugged south coast of Kangaroo Island.
The Layout: Five holes run directly along the coastline, and three more play straight toward the cliff’s edge. Picture dramatic infinity edge greens with nothing but the deep blue Southern Ocean as your backdrop.
The Wildlife: This isn’t just a golf course, it’s a sanctuary. Don’t be surprised if your gallery includes kangaroos, Tammar wallabies, echidnas, and wedge tailed eagles.
The Environment: The team has already planted over 2,500 native trees and plants, with 10,000 more on the way over the next five years. As a result, the course weaves through ancient bearded heath trees, indigenous South Australian irises, and a mix of succulents and other coastal plants.
The true magic of The Cliffs lies in how perfectly it slots into a broader, off the beaten path golf adventure. By skipping the standard city centric routes, we can curate an unforgettable island hopping itinerary that showcases the very best of Australia’s dramatic coastlines.
Imagine combining The Cliffs with these world class courses:
Cape Wickham & Ocean Dunes (King Island): Just a short flight away, King Island offers some of the purest links golf on the planet. Cape Wickham hugs the rugged ocean rocks, while Ocean Dunes delivers a thrilling, crashing surf experience.
Barnbougle Dunes & Lost Farm (Tasmania): These pristine layouts, regularly ranked among the top courses in the world, offer golf in its purest, most traditional form.
7 Mile Beach (Hobart, Tasmania): This highly anticipated new opening near Hobart adds yet another stellar coastal layout to your route, combining elite design with striking beachside vistas.
Kangaroo Island may feel like the edge of the Earth, but reaching it is surprisingly simple. You can hop on a quick flight from Adelaide or take a scenic ferry ride from Cape Jervis on mainland Australia. The island already welcomes around 200,000 visitors a year, and the team behind The Cliffs hopes to draw 15,000 of them to the golf course annually, all while building one of the world’s most sustainable golf properties.
If you’re ready to bypass the well trodden paths and be among the first to experience The Cliffs Kangaroo Island, let’s start planning. This is Australia at its wildest, most beautiful, and most rewarding.
