A Unique Role

At the Grange Golf Club, biodiversity management is a unique responsibility, expertly handled by Jessica Abercrombie, the club’s Biodiversity Manager. While the main course is meticulously maintained by a dedicated team, Jessica’s focus is on the 50 hectares of “out-of-play” areas—spaces outside the main fairways that hold natural beauty and ecological importance.

Balancing Nature with Playability

Jessica’s work encompasses tree care, habitat restoration, and rigorous weed control, all aimed at preserving and enhancing the landscape around the greens. Balancing the needs of golfers with ecological goals is an art she has mastered. Aware that planting trees and introducing native vegetation can sometimes pose challenges for golfers, she strives to create a harmonious blend of natural scenery and playability, carefully placing elements to enrich the environment without interfering with the course.

The Grange’s Commitment to Environmental Excellence

The Grange Golf Club is widely respected for its commitment to environmental stewardship, and Jessica’s efforts only add to its prestige. “It’s amazing how people react when they see my uniform; they know the Grange is something special,” Jessica shares.

Introducing Ecological Burns

One of the club’s newest initiatives under her guidance is the introduction of controlled ecological burns. This innovative technique involves applying heat to areas with existing sustainable seed banks, encouraging the growth of native grasses that thrive post-burn. Jessica is excited about this long-term project, anticipating significant ecological improvement over the next decade.

A Lasting Legacy at the Grange Golf Club

Having been with the Grange Golf Club for two and a half years, Jessica values both the physical and mental wellness the job offers. “It’s a fantastic atmosphere, and I wouldn’t change a thing about it,” she says. With her dedication, Jessica is not only enhancing the landscape but also leaving a lasting legacy that will shape the club’s natural environment for years to come.

Whether you’re a golf enthusiast or simply a nature lover, you’ll find that Jessica’s work contributes to an experience that’s truly remarkable at the Grange Golf Club.
