About the Company and Founder

1983

First Visit to Bhutan

  • First visit with the family to Bhutan in 1983 when less than 800 tourists a year visited.

1984

Hosting Bhutan Olympic Team Dinner

  • Hosted a dinner for Bhutan’s first Olympic team, which competed in archery in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.
  • Guests included the Bhutan Foreign Minister and Jim Easton, Olympic Archery Commissioner.

Exploratory Fishing Trip

  • A conversation with the Foreign Minister leads to an exploratory fishing trip in 1985.
  • This trip sparks an interest in fly fishing in the mountainous region of Bhutan.

First Group Fly Fishing Trip

  • Organized and led the first group to fly fish in Bhutan, exploring its unique landscapes.

Late 1980s

Continued Involvement with Bhutan

  • Continued to take small groups to Bhutan in the late 80s but decided to shift focus to marketing and selling fly fishing trips in New Zealand.

Friendship with Prince Namgyal Wangchuk

  • Became friends with His Royal Highness, Prince Namgyal Wangchuk, fostering a personal connection with Bhutan.

1988

Bhutan Friendship Foundation

  • Established the Bhutan Friendship Foundation (501c) with the wife in 1988.
  • Funded over $4,000,000 in projects in Bhutan to date.

Personal Trips to Bhutan

  • Stopped taking fishing groups to Bhutan but continued personal visits, going fishing (trout & Mahseer) and even hunting Blue Sheep at 14,000 ft.

1989

Fly-Tying Operation

  • Established a fly-tying operation in Bhutan with a Bhutanese partner.
  • Trained Bhutanese villagers to tie flies, with the products shipped for sale in Europe and the United States.
  • The operation closed about six years ago.

1990

Meeting with Jim Easton: Archery Business

  • Met Jim Easton at the dinner for the Bhutan Olympic team and became a dealer for Hoyt bows & Easton arrows in Bhutan.
  • Helped establish Yangphel Archery, a store with supporting services and normal retail pricing, ending the inflated prices for compound bows.

  • Continued the tradition of visiting Bhutan, making the 33rd visit in June 2023

This business is a participant in the Travel Consumer Restitution Corporation (TCRC). You, the passenger, may request reimbursement from TCRC if you are owed a refund of more than $50 for transportation or travel services which was not refunded in a timely manner by a seller of travel who was registered and participating in the TCRC at the time of sale.

The maximum amount which may be paid by the TCRC to any one passenger is the total amount paid on behalf of the passenger to the seller of travel, not to exceed $15,000.

A claim must be submitted to the TCRC within six months after the scheduled completion date of the travel.
