Ian Lawson, fondly known as “Henry,” left a 27-year career in banking for a life outdoors as a greenkeeper at the renowned Royal Adelaide Golf Club. In this journey of transformation, Ian found fulfillment, peace, and a unique appreciation for the subtle charm of this historic course.
For 27 years, Ian Lawson, often called “Henry” after the famed Australian bush poet, built a career in banking. In 1996, he made a pivotal change, moving from the finance world to a hands-on role in greenkeeping at the prestigious Royal Adelaide Golf Club. After nearly three decades in banking, the shift to greenkeeping was a breath of fresh air for Ian. Working outdoors with a dedicated team, he found a sense of relief and fulfillment that his previous career couldn’t provide.
Ian reflects on his decision to leave banking with one small regret: not doing it sooner. Royal Adelaide is a unique golf course, offering a rare feature—a railway line that bisects the course, with trains passing by every 20 to 30 minutes, either heading to the beach or back into town. This blend of nature and the subtle, serene interruptions of daily life embodies what makes Royal Adelaide special. The Grange Golf Club is widely respected for its commitment to environmental stewardship, and Jessica’s efforts only add to its prestige. “It’s amazing how people react when they see my uniform; they know the Grange is something special,” Jessica shares.
Having seen courses across the UK and Australia, Ian holds Royal Adelaide in high regard. The course’s understated elegance and natural flow make it, in his words, “a true gem.” The greenkeeping role has brought Ian immense satisfaction and peace of mind, far beyond what he found in banking. Looking back, he calls it the best decision he’s ever made and feels grateful every day to be part of Royal Adelaide.
